Dry or ecological toilet are those in which water is not used for waste management. Thus, giving the possibility of avoiding water and soil pollution. Besides these systems process human waste and transform it into compost, a natural fertilizer, useful to enrich the soil.These toilets neither use water nor join to the sewage network.
Permapreta® is a comprehensive and efficient dry toilet (including the composting system), as such the outcome of a long search optimizing these sets. Permapreta® gives a solution to all the management of faeces and urine, and organic waste. Its main strengths rely on three aspects: how it removes all odours, its safety against pathogens and its upper extraction. The last one allows Permapreta® to be incorporated into the work and architecture of buildings.
The faeces become vermi-compost thanks to the composting process inside the bathroom. This resulting material has optimal characteristics for its use in the regeneration of degraded soils.
Urine is stored for fermentation and thus elimination of possible pathogens and can also be used as a fertilizer, since it contains high concentrations of nutrients for plants, including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K).
Permapreta® has two models, one from 500 litres of volume that allow the average use of up to 3 or 4 people per day and another one from 750 litres of volume that allows daily use of up to an average of 6 or 7 people.
Its maintenance is simple. It just requires following the recommended protocols.
Its installation depends on whether it is installed in a previous construction or a new one needs to be made. Anyway, it is simpler than the usual sewage treatment plant construction.
To keep the worms healthy and alive, organic matter is provided for them to feed and reproduce. This organic matter is our faeces, bokashi, efficient microorganisms, some straw, toilet paper, pyrolytic carbon and some food scraps.
E. foetida lives between 0ºC and 43ºC, being the best temperatures for its activity and reproduction between 20ºC and 25ºC
The resulting hummus material has a high biological value indicated to be used in forestry, agriculture and soil rehabilitation. Its use in home comestible gardens and urban public comestible gardens spaces should be avoided.
It takes two years to obtain the first compost since its first use. After the first extraction, it should be extracted once a year.
If the process is not carried out according to the recommended indications, the composting process can be stopped and it can cause an excess of untransformed material. It would be necessary to recover the appropriate protocols and perhaps add worms again. It is always possible to intervene and manage from the upper openings of the system.
Instead of using biocidal products such as bleach or ammonia, it is recommended to use natural products for maintenance and cleaning, for example, eMC cleaner, vinegar, natural soap, or lemon. To remove it, use with toilet paper.
Taking medical treatment does not impede using Permapreta®, bacteria population will self-regulate.
Humus from public dry toilets is not recommended for use in orchards. It could be used when it belongs to families without any references of infections by pathogens or parasites, adding a good previous superficial solarisation. (Not to use for the production of leafy vegetables). Anyway, it is an avoidable risk
Our company provides the initial foundation. You can always provide worms and beds from other suppliers or orchard or garden compost, taking care that they do not have flies or other flying insects.
With children and babies, precautions must always be taken, it is quite difficult for this to happen though. The bathroom has been installed in an alternative school and is being used by a group of children and adapters are fitted as in any normal bathroom. However, the toilet lid of any Permapreta must always be closed to ensure proper operation and ventilation of the system.
